We appreciated Nu Car’s rates, just be sure to read the fine print before you rent from them. We gambled again by getting another bargain deal from Fox Rent A Car in SLC for our trip to Idaho and thankfully had no issues with that company. However, apparently they’re a small company and we weren’t prepared for these quirks - we should have read the fine print. In the end, it was hard to beat Nu Car rental rates. As we had prepaid and our booking was non-refundable, we had to eat the cost of renting a car from another agency for that portion of our trip. We had never rented a car with such restrictions before. Considering Idaho was only an hour and a half away, we were quite astonished. Next, we found out we were not allowed to drive the car to Idaho, one of our intended destinations.

Still, considering we had prepaid, we felt they should have held our car. Thankfully, a suitable car arrived in a bit over an hour. Their lot was empty and they said it could be hours or days. Nu Car said our only option was to wait indefinitely for another suitable car to arrive. Too many horror stories, while I've never had a truly bad experience with a rental (if you exclude one incident with Enterprise at MCO - had to do with damage to the vehicle that was noted when I picked it up, but they still tried to charge me for after I dropped it back off).Jun 2022 We arrived (granted two hours and five minutes late) to find that the car we had prepaid for had been given to someone else. The stories about Advantage and Fox are why I avoid them, to be honest. It might feel like a hard sell, but I've never had to say anything more than "no" and they move on.įWIW, I have rented from many of the major agencies (Hertz, Avis, Thrifty, National, Enterprise, Budget, etc.) but tend to avoid smaller and/or local agencies out of an abundance of caution. Every rental car agency does this, unless you are a member of their "club" where you already have your preferences indicated in the database.

My advice, be ready with the "no, thank you" both verbally and by initially declining the various coverages you don't believe you need or want. I got no hard sell when I went to the counter at all (this was late last summer). They were able to change the pickup time without changing the rate. It turned out my flight was delayed, so I called Hertz to advise them of this. Hertz developed the new brand to replace Advantage Rent a Car which had to be. Just to provide some additional feedback, I had a reservation with Hertz to pick up a car in the evening.
